Allen County Government is looking for a knowledgeable, hands-on professional to step into the role of Residential Building Inspector. If you’ve spent years in construction and know your way around job sites, blueprints, and building codes—this is your opportunity to bring that expertise into a role that makes a lasting impact across our community. You won’t just be inspecting homes—you’ll be helping ensure safety, quality, and compliance for families across Allen County. What You’ll Do Conduct inspections on new construction, remodels, and residential renovations Ensure compliance with state and local building codes Partner with contractors, designers, and property owners to explain requirements and resolve issues Investigate complaints and follow through to resolution Document findings, prepare reports, and track compliance Perform follow-up inspections on code violations Interpret and apply building codes with sound judgment and professionalism What You Bring To The Table You’re not entry-level—you’ve been in the field and know how construction really works. High School Diploma or GED 8+ years of experience as a licensed residential contractor Valid Allen County Contractor License, Inspector Certification, or ability to achieve the license within 12 months of hire. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction plans Strong understanding of residential building codes and practicesSolid communication skills—you can explain complex code requirements in plain language Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office and reporting tools) Valid Driver’s License What Makes You Stand Out You’re confident navigating job sites and talking with contractors You can balance enforcement with collaboration You’re detail-oriented but practical in your approach You take pride in doing things the right way—not the easy way What To Expect Field inspections in all types of weather conditions Exposure to active construction environments Climbing ladders, walking uneven terrain, bending, lifting, and inspecting structures up close On-call availability for two weeks per year Why Allen County?
